A moment of reflection can change the dynamics of an entire situation. Chris Evert, a legend in her field, was under the wrath of a WTA player. Reason? Her comment about Karolina Muchova echoed an unacceptable aspect. Evert, known for her humble personality, apologized instantly showing why she deserves to be remembered as an icon of the sport.
Evert shared an on X after Ons Jabeur criticized Evert’s opinion about Muchova. Earlier, the former American player compared Muchova with male players during the ongoing US Open. Before the American Slam, Muchova participated in only one hard-court tournament, the Cincinnati Open. Runner-up Jessica Pegula defeated her in the second round of Cincinnati.
After that, she participated in the US Open and defeated Naomi Osaka. However, more than her performance, the spotlight went to Chris Evert’s commentary for ESPN during that match. She compared Muchova with a male player. “She plays like a guy. She wants to play like a guy. The guys have bigger serves than the women, they have better volleys for the most part, they move a little bit better,” read Evert’s comments.

After Evert’s comment, Jabeur tweeted criticizing the former American Grand Slam champion. Mentioning how an “amazing talented player” the Czech is, Jabeur requested all to “stop stereotyping based on gender.” Jabeur’s tweet caught Evert’s attention and she instantly apologized with a humble tweet. “i apologize if I offended you both, certainly not my intention. The power, mobility, and athleticism has improved so much, and many women I interview have men idols who they aspire to play like. Again, maybe my delivery could’ve been better, so sorry!” Evert tweeted on X.

While Jabeur’s support highlighted the positive relationship among players who often compete against each other, Evert’s apology also expressed her humble personality.
The American former legend could ignore the criticism but she chose to respond with absolute politeness. However, this is not the first time Evert received backlash for her controversial commentary. During Coco Gauff’s match against Elina Svitolina, Evert’s commentary disappointed the audience storming social media with negative remarks.

Have an interesting take?
While Chris Evert has garnered a lot of fame as a former tennis player, she couldn’t have had enough success with her role as a commentator. Recently, during Gauff’s match against Elina Svitolina, Evert praised the defending champion despite Svitolina winning the opening set. Although the Ukrainian player won the first set comfortably by 6-3, Evert’s eyes were all on Coco. This partial nature left the audience frustrated and fans criticized her commentary.
While commentators are meant to analyze the match by offering more excitement and intrigue in the ambiance, they also drop their opinions. While Chris Evert’s statement hurt the sentiments of some WTA players and the audience, it was probably an opinion based on the moment. Nonetheless, her humble apology showcases her greatness and presents him as one of the legends in the true sense of the term.
