Is Beatriz Haddad Maia the dark horse who will spoil Wozniacki's fairytale return at the US Open?

“I feel very much at home,” Caroline Wozniacki said after her thumping third-round victory at the ongoing US Open. It has been one of Dane’s favorite tournaments and although she is yet to win a title here, Wozniacki has reached the summit clash twice at Flushing Meadows. As a result, it isn’t a surprise to see her dominate her opponents in New York again. However, she will face her first real test later today against Beatriz Haddad Maia, the 22nd seed from Brazil.

Like Caroline Wozniacki, Haddad Maia has shown glimpses of her best form at this tournament. Predominantly a clay-court player, the Brazilian star has adjusted well and it promises to be a cracker of a contest against Wozniacki.

Late last year, Caroline Wozniacki announced a surprise return to tennis, three years after calling it quits. Despite being away from tennis for long, the Danish star has had decent results on her comeback. She reached the fourth round of the US Open last year as well. Although Wozniacki is yet to win a title this year, she has excelled so far at Flushing Meadows. The 34-year-old has won all her matches in straight sets and one can expect another power-packed performance when she faces Haddad Maia today.

On the other hand, it hasn’t been the best of seasons for Haddad Maia. Although she has played in most of the big tournaments in 2024, she hasn’t won a title. Her best performance of the season came at the recently-concluded Tennis In The Land tournament where she reached the summit clash. Nonetheless, the Brazilian star is coming into the match on the back of a big win over Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets. Thus, it could be anybody’s game when Wozniacki and Haddad Maia clash today.

Interestingly, Caroline Wozniacki and Haddad Maia have had contrasting career trajectories. While the Dane was at the peak of her career, Haddad Maia was still finding her footing on the WTA Tour. And, when the Brazilian star began peaking, Wozniacki called it quits. As a result, the two never crossed paths against each other, and the US Open 4th round clash will be their maiden encounter.

Prediction: Wozniacki to continue her fine form

Wozniacki is yet to lose more than 3 games in a set at the ongoing US Open. Although the former world no. 1 is placed exactly 50 spots below her opponent today on the WTA rankings chart, it doesn’t depict the true potential of the veteran, especially with the form she is in.

Particularly speaking, Wozniacki has been at her attacking best in the tournament so far. In her third-round victory over Jessika Ponchet, she won 88% of points on her second serve and 45% of the receiving points. Additionally, she won all of her 7 points near the net. This aspect of Wozniacki’s game is proving to be tough to handle for her opponents.

Caroline Wozniacki is predicted to win the match against Haddad Maia in straight sets and make it to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Their match will take place at the Louis Armstrong Stadium later today.
