“Let’s just put an end to this myth that women players cannot be friends” – Serena Williams. Well, we all have heard a lot about ‘Sabadosa’ in the last few months! Now it’s time to focus on the two other BFFs in the women’s tennis world. Caroline Wozniacki recently secured her spot in the fourth round of the 2024 US Open, by beating France’s Jessika Ponchet by 6-3, 6-2. However, after the match, she was “pretty mad” at Williams for not showing up in her match.
Williams made a comeback at the US Open as a spectator this weekend. She was even spotted watching Jannik Sinner’s match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. However, Wozniacki perhaps had a misconception that her BFF was present at the Louis Armstrong Stadium to watch Tommy Paul. So, the Dane was a bit upset about Serena Williams’ absence in the stands during her match. Shortly, after finishing the match, Wozniacki, in the on-court interview, was asked whether she’d catch up with Williams and celebrate this victory.
In reply, she said, “I hope so. I’m gonna text her. I’m pretty mad at her for not showing up at my match (laughs). I saw she was watching Tommy. We have to talk about that a bit later.” The two-time US Open finalist (2009, 2014) has looked quite impressive in this tournament.

Wozniacki hasn’t yet dropped a set so far here and she has now also become the eighth player in the Open Era to reach the R16 of the US Open at 34 years old or older than that. Caroline Wozniacki is the first to achieve that feat since Serena Williams in 2020. She’ll hope that she gets the attention of the ‘Queen of the Court’ now!

Is Wozniacki really “mad” at Serena Williams for not turning up at her match? Well, she later on clarified with a tweet that it was “clearly a joke!” Both the players have played against each other 11 times in their careers. Although Williams has a clear edge of 10-1 in the H2H, fans have witnessed quite a few close matches between the two.
So, their rivalry was quite well-known among tennis fans, but how did this rivalry grow into such a strong bonding in between the two? In 2014, during the WTA Finals, Serena Williams defeated Wozniacki by a close margin and the Dane was quite disappointed after that loss. Williams was then spotted entering the locker room and consoling her for the defeat.
Even previously there have been many such incidents where both of them were spotted having fun with each other. However, Williams played an enormous role in giving her support and her courage when Wozniacki split with Rory Mcllroy. Also, when Wozniacki returned to court after turning down her retirement call, it was Williams who told her, “I’m going to cheer you on every step of the way, and if you ever need anything, I’m here.” Wozniacki has time and again revealed her love for Williams. Let’s take a glimpse at some of those moments.

“I love Serena” – Caroline Wozniacki’s heartfelt admission about her friendship with Williams
Just after beating Ponchet, she claimed that she loves to hang out with Serena Williams. “I love talking to her. You know, I love the support that I get from her, as well,” said Caroline Wozniacki. Even though Williams isn’t on the Tour anymore, she is still in touch with the Danish tennis star. Wozniacki considers her as one of her closest friends in her life and she has portrayed her love for the ‘Queen’ multiple times during her previous interviews.
For example in 2017, while speaking to Graham Bensinger, Wozniacki said, “I love Serena, she is the best, not only on the court is she an unbelievable athlete, she is a person I look very much up to. She’s done so many things in the sport but at the same, she always keeps her feet on the ground. She is so good with people, that’s the biggest quality in a person to me, who they are and how friendly they are.”
