In the finals of the Ostrava Open, unseeded Anett Kontaveit crushed the in-form Maria Sakkari of Greece in straight sets. Anett Kontaveit of Estonia clinched her second singles WTA title of the year. The Estonian marched to the title resoundingly without dropping a single set in the whole competition.

Unseeded Kontaveit beat Sakkari at Ostrava Open

Anett Kontaveit conquered at Ostrava Open, beating the fourth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-2, 7-5. In both sets, the Estonian dominated. Despite having a pretty good season, the Greek couldn’t surpass Kontaveit. The head-to-head statistics going into the match were in Sakkari’s favor with 5-3, but Kontaveit looked ferocious and made it 5-4 in style.

In the post-match press conference, Anett Kontaveit talked about her opponent, Maria Sakkari. She said, “Maria is such a good player, and we’ve had a lot of tough matches between us, and I knew I had to play well to beat her. I think I managed to serve pretty well and play aggressive, but be as consistent as possible.”

She further added, “When you’re winning matches, it definitely gives you confidence. I feel like I am definitely playing better than I was in the middle of the season, and I think good things can come of it.”

Second WTA Title for Anett Kontaveit in 2021

The WTA 500-level tournament is the biggest title of Anett Kontaveit’s career and her third WTA singles title overall. Kontaveit won her second WTA title of the 2021 season. The Estonian captured her last tournament at Cleveland Championships in America four weeks ago. She defeated Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania in another straight sets victory – 7-6, 6-4. Clearly, Kontaveit seems to handle the pressure well in crucial matches.

Anett Kontaveit has now won 12 of her last 13 matches. She first triumphed at the Cleveland championships. Her winning streak was ended at the US Open by Iga Swiatek in the third round. Swiatek beat Kontaveit in a three-set thriller with the scoreline, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Despite her loss at US Open, she has made a strong comeback to the tour and won her third career title.
