Marta Kostyuk, a Ukrainian tennis player, recently lambasted the US Open for their blunder. The Russian invasion of Ukraine continues in 2024, and the situation has impacted all facets of the lives of people from the two countries. As Russia was deemed the aggressor, their athletes in any sport, including tennis, have to play under a neutral flag, with all media outlets portraying it as such.

However, as the US Open’s official page shared the news without following the norm, Kostyuk found herself livid at the social media page of the tournament. She shared a long rant about them on her own social media pages.

The Ukrainian player beat her opponent, Maria Timofeeva, in straight sets in the fourth round of the Australian Open. The scoreboard read 6-2, 6-1 at the end of their clash. Kostyuk, elated about her win, would not feel in such a manner for long. She landed on the US Open Instagram page, which shared the news while adding the flag of Timofeeva’s country despite her being a neutral athlete.

The post made her angry, and she shared a rant about the situation. She started her statement by talking about the banality of pushing a neutral flag under these players. She said, “And so today, after my victory over the athlete from the aggressor country, the Russian flag was published on the official resource of one of the biggest tennis tournaments in the world.

Elaborating on the situation, Kostyuk continued, “Today is the 607th day of full-scale war, and the world continues to promote murderous country and a country that uses its athletes as parts of its propaganda. I call on media representatives, officials, and the sports community to stop using the tennis court to promote “Russian Peace”.”
