After tumbling in the round of 16 at Indian Wells, Elina Svitolina continued on the WTA tour at Tenerife Ladies Open. Svitolina entered the competition as the number one seed. However, in her first round-battle, Maria Camila Osorio Serrano crushed Svitolina in an enthralling three-set match. 

Despite trailing by one set, the World No. 63 showed exceptional grit to beat Svitolina in the next two sets. Svitolina had an impressive hard-court season in America. Just ahead of the US Open 2021, the Ukranian triumphed at the Chicago Women’s Open by defeating Alize Cornet in two sets. She even reached the quarter-finals at the Flushing Meadows before losing against eventual finalist, Leylah Fernandez.

Elina Svitolina out of the Tenerife Ladies Open

Elina Svitolina has been in scintillating form on the WTA tour this year. She won the bronze medal for Ukraine in women’s singles in the Tokyo Olympics. She also won her 16th singles title in Chicago before the US Open.

Nevertheless, Svitolina couldn’t overcome Maria Camila Osorio at the ongoing Tenerife Ladies Open. Even though Svitolina clinched the first set, she was unable to keep the momentum going and eventually lost against the Colombian.

Maria outshined Svitolina in most regards, landing more first serves and managing a better conversion rate off them. She also had four aces, compared to Elina’s two. While Elina had a better percentage in break points saved, the 19-year-old’s dominance proved too much for her in the end.

Who is Maria Camila Osorio?

Maria Camila Osorio is a 19-year-old professional from Colombia. In her career so far, the Colombian has achieved one WTA title at Copa Colsanitas in Colombia, 2021 and three ITF titles on the circuit. She is presently ranked World No. 63. Following this season’s success, Camila Osoria gracefully entered the top 100 in May 2021.

2021 is yet again proving to be a year for the youngsters on the WTA tour after the emergence of Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez at the US Open. Hopefully, Maria can build on her momentum after beating a giant of the tour in Elina Svitolina.
