3 Records Coco Gauff Can Break at the WTA Finals

What a stellar year Coco Gauff is having! The American tennis sensation is just 19 but has already reached the peak of her career. Last month, she won the US Open which was her maiden Grand Slam title. What made it even special was the fact that she did it in front of her home crowd. Additionally, she has had a consistent run across the tournaments this season. As a result, it has propelled her to a spot at the WTA Finals, the year-ending tournament amongst the best in the world. While Gauff may be eyeing the trophy in Mexico, she has a glorious chance to break as many as three records.

Due to her on-court exploits, she has been billed to achieve big things in the future and has already drawn comparisons to fellow American great, Serena Williams. Let’s find out what records Gauff can break in Mexico.

Coco Gauff eyes a hattrick of records

Not only has Gauff qualified in singles but also in doubles at the year-ending championship. Gauff and her compatriot, Jessica Pegula, will be teaming up in Mexico, eyeing their maiden WTA Finals title. As a result, Gauff can become only the fourth player to win the WTA Finals in both singles as well as doubles in the same year and the first player to do so since 2000. The three other players to do so are Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis, and Jana Novotna.

Further, Gauff can end the year as the highest earner this year if she manages to win the WTA Finals trophy. The American sensation currently sits third in this regard, behind Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek.

Another record that Gauff can break by lifting the trophy in Mexico will see her surpass Maria Sharapova. If the 19-year-old manages to succeed in the upcoming WTA Finals, she will become the first teenager since Sharapova in 2004 to win the year-ending championship.

Despite these records, Gauff hasn’t had the fondest of memories of the WTA Finals. She revealed her disappointment last year after a disastrous campaign.

Gauff will aim to come back stronger

The 19-year-old American was the fourth seed last year at the WTA Finals. However, she failed to win a single match in her group, which also consisted of Iga Swiatek, Caroline Garcia, and Daria Kasatkina.

Revealing her disappointment on this, she said, “It was not my day, it was not my weekend. But okay. Tomorrow, I’ll be ready to fly to Glasgow on Billie Jean King. It was my worst week of the year. I have never lost so quickly (6 matches in singles and doubles).”
