Venus Williams has been ageing like a fine wine. The seven-time major champion turned 43 last week and days after her 43rd birthday, ‘Queen V’ registered an emphatic victory. She came through a long three-set battle against Italian Camila Giorgi to set up a mouthwatering 2nd round against Jelena Ostapenko.

Considering the fact that Williams already has more than 25 years of on-court experience, she is often struck by nostalgia. Recently she spoke about how different it is to play at this age as compared to her peak days. Some of the revelations made by the former world number 1 were very intriguing.

Williams mentioned how she is reminded of things she used to do in her early days and how experience kicks in from time to time. She said via inews, “When I’m on court I’m reminded of the things I used to do well. There’s moments of deja vu on court like ‘oh yeah this works’ and I’ve never had that experience before in my life.” Her words suggested that she relies more on experience now rather than instinct.

Williams further added, “There’s so many people out there that would like to be doing what I’m doing, so I don’t take that for granted.” Williams also feels grateful to be able to continue playing at this age. She also indicates that she is playing without the pressure of achieving something. It must be relieving for Williams to play without expectations after contesting as a favorite for slams throughout her career.

Williams has also received a wildcard entry to Wimbledon and we all expect to see her at the Centre Court in two weeks from now. The former world number 1 did not have enough ranking points for a direct entry. However, providing a wildcard was the least Wimbledon could do for their five-time champion.

Can Venus Williams make a deep run at Wimbledon?

The win against Giorgi was a big positive for Williams ahead of Wimbledon. But on the downside, she hasn’t won two matches on the bounce since 2019. Her comeback earlier this year was derailed after struggling to find match fitness in Auckland.

Williams’ experience will come in handy at Wimbledon. Grass also happens to be her strongest surface and she has still got her big serve working. A generous draw could help Queen V progress to the second week of the slam.
