Chris Evert is a player that executed a perfect career fighting all the odds. At first, being a woman, the very first task for her was to prove her gender’s worth in the sport. Then she had to give her best to the rivalry between her and Martina Navratilova throughout her career.

Though all the pressure and expectations she shouldered didn’t break her. What shocked Evert was the disease that sneaked into her family and snatched her beloved sister. The 18-time Grand Slam champion recently detailed the frustration and sorrow ovarian cancer brought to her family.

While speaking to Amna Nawaz, Evert spoke about how a precautionary test helped her survive the disease. She explained that the detection of the BRCA gene in her younger sister Jeanne’s blood made all her siblings go through a BRCA test. She?said, “I went the next day and took the BRCA test and 10 days later discovered that I was positive. I went to the doctor. He said: ‘OK, you have to have a hysterectomy'”.

Thereafter, the former world number one added, “My doctor called me three days later and said, ‘We are really shocked about this, but our findings are that you had ovarian cancer, and you had cancer in your fallopian tubes'”.

“And I was like, ‘whoa’. But I didn’t feel anything. And that’s why this is an insidious, ugly cancer, because you don’t feel any effects whatsoever. And many times when women are diagnosed, they’re already in stage four.”

The seven-time?French Open?champion broke the sad news in January 2021 and decided to take immediate medical help. She underwent six chemotherapy sessions to uproot the deadly disease and now has returned to her routine. Speaking of Jeanne, the former tennis professional passed away at the age of 62 after bravely fighting against ovarian cancer for around two and a half years.

What is Evert up to these days?

The Hall of Famer retired from the sport in 1989 and decided to invest her energy in broadcasting and analytics. After battling for years in an intense rivalry with the nine-time?Wimbledon champion, Evert then worked alongside Navratilova at ESPN.
