In the previous season, the tennis community witnessed some of the biggest names bidding adieu to the sport. The list of such players also includes the Swiss Maestro Roger Federer and the American tennis legend, Serena Williams. Both legends of the sport moved away from the court after clinching almost every possible title on the WTA Tour. While several fans and media were busy talking about the former tennis ace’s retirement, another renowned WTA star walked away from the sport during last year’s US Open.

The former German tennis player, Andrea Petkovic, also played her farewell match at Flushing Meadows in the previous season. However, the retirement of the ‘Queen of the Court’ was such a hot topic that the 35-year-old German star’s retirement was kept away from the limelight. Talking about the same, Petkovic recently revealed how Serena’s massive influence took the pressure off of her.

Notably, Serena Williams and her retirement decision became the main topic both before and after the 2022 US Open. The fans and media were busy capturing some of the last moments of Serena’s tennis career during her farewell tournament.

While all this was happening in Flushing Meadows, New York, Andrea Petkovic’s retirement got overshadowed. The former German tennis player talked about the same during her appearance in the Inside-In podcast. Speaking of it, the 35-year-old revealed how she was under that extra pressure because of her decision to move away from the court.

However, Petkovic also said that Serena’s massive influence took the pressure off her, as she was a hot topic for everyone. She also received a number of texts on her phone, which were about the former tennis ace. Taking note of that, she imagined, “Ok, now it doesn’t matter, nobody will care about poor little Andrea at the US Open'”

After an illustrious journey on the WTA Tour, the former World No.9 decided to put down her racket in the previous season’s US Open. Petkovic’s plans were somehow affected as she had to share that stage with the American tennis legend. However, after her first-round defeat, the WTA German star hailed Williams by saying that she always had a lot of respect for her rival. She also wanted to talk to Serena about the way she handled that pressure during the tournament.
