Venus was playing against Irina Spirlea of Romania, and an ugly incident happened in the match.
Irina collided with Venus
In the third set of the match, while walking to the sidelines during changeovers, Irina walked straight in the direction of Venus which led to a collision between them. Later, the Romanian explained her reason behind going straight and not turning midway.
“I’m not going to move. I mean, she’s never trying to turn or whatever. She thinks she’s the f*****g Venus Williams. She not going to turn, she just went like this. I was like, “I want to see if she’s turning.” She didn’t,” she said.
Further, she explained what particular move from Venus irked her. “I’m not going to ask, you know, to say hi on the court. But at least turn at the changeover or something, because it can be the same time you cross the court. You just turn or something. I’ve done all the time, I turn. But she just walks. I wanted to see, you know, if she’s going to turn. She didn’t,” she added.
Venus went on to win the match and moved into the finals. However, she lost to Martina Hingis in the final. Notably, this was not the first time the Romanian showed her rough side. Earlier in 1996, she became the first WTA player to be disqualified for hurling abuses at a match official.
