The American tennis legends, Venus and Serena Williams worked hard on the courts of Compton before they moved to Florida to pursue their tennis journey. The Williams sisters spent most of their childhood playing tennis at Compton Park along with their father and coach, Richard Williams. However, the Williams family also witnessed the strange and shady neighborhood during their stay in Compton California.

Notably, Serena’s sister, Isha Price, recently revealed what it was like growing up in Compton during their childhood. Additionally, she also talked about the shady neighborhood that also included gang members and their activities like selling drugs.

Venus and Serena Williams’ sister Isha Price talked about their childhood in Compton

Isha Price was recently featured in the premiere of WBEZ’s Making podcast where they talked about Serena Williams’ illustrious tennis journey. Meanwhile, she was asked the question about their childhood and what it was like growing up in Compton, California back then. Price answered by stating, It’s hard for me to kind of describe to people because everybody grew up somewhere. You know, I didn’t really think of Compton as this really terrible place. You know, it was home. There were things about it that you know, were less than ideal.”

She went on to say that their house in Compton was very loving and her family had a ton of fun. However, Price talked about their “strange” neighborhood. She stated, “even though to the outside world, it was obviously very strange. There were gang members and stuff they used to live across the street, they would you know, they sell drugs. It just was what it was, it’s Compton.”

Price further added that they knew them all by name, but she also stated, “we knew that we wanted something more obviously, we liked the cause peace. We liked the shows that were on television.” Serena’s sister further stated that they always wanted to aspire to be more and be different and not be a part of all that. Price added that they all kind of made a pact when they finally left Compton. She talked about their pact “to not have to go back like we went back it will be on our own terms. And that’s what we’ve been able to do.”

During the podcast, Venus and Serena Williams’ sister also talked about how they used to clean and paint their childhood home in Compton. Price reminisced about the graffiti they had on their house. She further revealed that all the family members used to clean and paint the house.

However, she also revealed that their father, Richard Williams never painted the front of the house. As a result, Price once directly asked her father about the same. Richard answered by saying that, “this will help you to be strong.”  Additionally, Price learned an important lesson that she should be proud of where she comes from, no matter where that is. Price was always proud of where she came from despite others’ opinions.
