Tennis and Serena Williams go hand in hand, as she had an unmatched and extraordinary passion for the sport. There is a saying that legends are not made overnight. And even Serena Williams, who won 23 Grand Slam titles, is the epitome of this cliched saying. She had to overcome many obstacles to get to where she is now and to be the dominant force in women’s tennis. So, to tell her side of the story, the tennis star, and ESPN are getting ready to create the docuseries titled “In the Arena: Serena Williams”.
Recently, the teaser for the docuseries was released. In it, the 41-year-old former tennis player discusses how her tennis career began as a curse but ultimately made her the Serena Williams that millions love and cherish.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion’s documentary trailer was released by Nine Two Six, which is founded by Serena herself. Nine Two Six is a multimedia production house that will elevate women and share diverse stories with the audience. The trailer was released on the multimedia production company’s official Instagram page. In that trailer, the former world number one talked about how she never expected to become the Serena that she turned out to be, eventually.
She said, “That target, that big giant red X, that I couldn’t see but everyone else saw. Started out as a curse. Everyone wanted to beat me. It became, ‘We don’t care who wins, we just don’t want her to win’. But that target got to be also a blessing. These young women pushed me, more than they ever knew, because they wanted to beat me so bad. They made me better. So what I thought started out as a curse ended up making me Serena.”

This isn’t the first documentary that has focused on Williams’ life. In 2001, she was the focus of an HBO docuseries, “Being Serena,” which premiered in 2018.
The toughest part of being Serena Williams
Every problem that the American tennis legend faced always made her better, on and off the tennis court. In 2021, the 41-year-old tennis player sat down and responded to inquiries about her mental health issues during the Wimbledon Championships. She mentioned how such problems came with her fame and position in the tennis community.

The Queen of the Court explained that she has had a large X on her back ever since she won the US Open in 1999. Additionally, she was always set up against tough competition, whether it was a Grand Slam tournament or any WTA event. In addition, she mentioned how mentally taxing it was for her and said that whoever won against her would inevitably lose the following round. But that solidifeid her belief that, in the end, that’s why she’s Serena.
