Tonight in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, we will see 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams possibly for the last time in singles competition, as she takes on the world no.2 Anett Kontaveit in the second round of the US Open.

Before Serena faces the Estonian, her childhood coach, Rick Macci posted a video from 1991, where he talked about both Venus and Serena. In that video, he praised Venus; however, he also talked about Serena’s nature, as he deemed her one of the best athletes he ever had in his academy.

Rick Macci reminisces a childhood video of Venus and Serena Williams

Earlier, the Hall of Famer coach Rick Macci took to Twitter and posted a video of an old interview. In the caption, he wrote, Sometimes the little one is overlooked. Serena is one of the best athletes I’ve EVER had! She’s very natural-she seems like she has all the time in the world-intangible qualities.. people can’t see- at championship level that spells the difference.

As seen in the video, Macci was praising Venus, as she was tall and had better athletic ability. Moreover, her tennis prowess was far better than Serena‘s at that time. However, Macci later praised Serena for her natural athletic abilities and other intangible qualities, which are very essential for anyone to win at a Grand Slam level.

It is worth noting that Macci was one of the very first coaches of Venus and Serena. Moreover, the sisters moved out from Compton to learn at Macci’s academy in Florida. In that academy, Macci  did everything to sharpen their skills to become great tennis players. In terms of Grand Slam titles, Serena won 23 major titles while Venus won 7.

Yesterday, Venus Williams bowed out in the very first round of the US Open, as she is yet to win a singles match in 2022. After the elder Williams sister’s fall, fans are wondering if the younger one is going to suffer the same fate tonight.

As mentioned earlier, Serena will face the no.2 seed Kontaveit in tonight’s second-round match. Safe to say, it will be a much tougher match than her first-round match, where she beat Danka Kovinic in straight sets.

If she wins her second-round match, she will face either Evgeniya Rodina or Ajla Tomljanovic. If the 23-time Grand Slam champion loses, she will still get another opportunity in the doubles to make her mark in her final Grand Slam tournament.
