Sloane Stephens has experienced a rapid rise on the women’s circuit. By winning the US Open in 2017, she proved that she is one of the best players America has produced in recent years. Stephens has always been compared to some of the greats from her country, i.e. Serena and Venus Williams.
However, since her US Open triumph, she has failed to maintain the same consistency that took her to the top of the rankings.

Stephens talks about her comparison with Serena Williams
The 29-year-old has been called a younger version Serena in the past, due to the many similarities between the pair’s style of play. However, in an old interview, Stephens was adamant that she is here to carve her own legacy. She said, “I don’t think so. There’s so many different people and I think she doesn’t get the acknowledgment that she should just because she’s an African-American woman. And I feel if you’re going to be the GOAT, you’re going to be the GOAT. Period.”
“Just because Serena has been great and done the things she’s done that has nothing to do with me. I am my own person. I am proud of my accomplishments and it has nothing to do with her,” she added.
Stephens has failed to replicate the success from the 2017 season, after suffering a foot injury keeping her out for months. Since then fell out of the Top 40 of the WTA rankings, having won 7 career titles.

After winning the US Open, Serena posted a tweet that said: “I created you.” This arose huge controversy, with many questioning the 23-time Slam winner’s response. Later Stephens got the better of Serena in the Australian Open.
Sloane told ESPN The Magazine about their relationship, saying “She didn’t say a word to me, she didn’t talk to me, she didn’t say hi, she didn’t look at me, she hasn’t been in the same room with me since I played her in Australia.”
