Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian-founded LAGC becomes an entrepreneurial lesson for new founders

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is now actively expanding her off-court endeavors. Along with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, she founded TGL’s first team, Los Angeles Golf Club (LAGC). It is Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy‘s TGL’s first golf team.

Now, to increase its fan following and customer base, Ohanian gave a perfect example of how to lead one’s brand. He reminisced about the personal video message he sent to people who would order LAGC merch. He added, “People were thrilled since they knew this took real time to execute.” Deriving a lesson from this, he stated, “That good feeling translates to brand loyalty, positive word-of-mouth, & a healthy community.”

Sharing some tips on building a loyal community, he stated, Make 1-1 phone calls. Write personal emails. Find individual ways to surprise and delight your community.” As per him, this will eventually lead people to believe that the founder cares about them personally, which goes a long way in yielding results.

Finally, he also talked about investing time and energy in bringing out cool merch. Because “Merch gives people a sense of identity that’s shared with each other + connected back to the community. It’s also free advertising.”
