“One of my biggest losses was definitely one of my biggest lessons. And that was way back in the 90s,” Venus recalled. “I just turned 19. And then Serena and I are both in the US Open finals. You can imagine I just turned 19, she’s 17 years old, we’re just kids. We’re both in the semi-finals and I just remember being unable to handle the moment just too nervous, just too doubtful.”
Venus added that she faltered quite a bit before and during the match while Serena went on to win the Slam. She said that it was an amazing feat for a 17-year-old. For Venus, it was a horrible defeat, as she wanted to be the first Williams to win a final. Venus added that she thought of herself as the weakest link and it was the worst feeling for her.

Although the loss was crushing, she became even more motivated to train hard and show her own glory to the world. “So that loss really crushed me. But it also really motivated me to say I’m going to do whatever it takes to be great.”
