Did Caroline Wozniacki really flip off Haddad Maia, or are fans blowing it out of proportion?

What could have been a memorable run at the US Open for Beatriz Haddad Maia has turned into a controversy-marred journey. Since her debut into the professional circuit in 2010, the Brazilian tennis star has gone under the radar. However, the faulty call controversy during her R3 match against Anna Kalinskaya brought her into the limelight in New York. But it did not stop after the R3 match was over. It rather spilled over to Maia’s R4 match against Caroline Wozniacki, as the tennis fans caught hold of Wozniacki’s word, and gave it a spin against Maia!

The faulty review call by the Chair Umpire during the Kalinskaya vs Haddad Maia match caught the tennis circuit by storm, as it was not reviewed from all angles while the final judgment was made to award the point to Haddad Maia. Consequently, this led to a negative array of emotions among tennis fans, as Kalinskaya lost the match, while Maia moved on to set up the R4 clash against Wozniacki. However, in an emotionally charged match, both the players put some amazing tennis on display.

Today though, a video shared by a fan on X went viral and it wasn’t from the match between Haddad Maia and Kalinskaya. It was rather from the match between Haddad Maia and Wozniacki. As the Danish player was celebrating after claiming the 2nd set, she apparently uttered an offensive word, “F–k,” as per the fan. Tennis fans are now speculating Wozniacki was flipping off Haddad Maia after making a comeback in the set. They are also trying to connect it with the Kalinskaya vs Maia match controversy.

This led to the opening of Pandora’s box as some of the tennis fans wondered why Haddad Maia was actually getting accused of cheating. Some other fans though tried to blame the Brazilian tennis star for the controversial point she was awarded during her match against Kalinskaya, although it was the umpire’s call, not hers.

Tennis Fans’ diverge views on Caroline Wozniacki’s speculative word against Beatriz Haddad Maia

The controversy during the third-round match between Hadda Maia and Kalinskaya, when seen from a rational view, seems to be a normal turn of events. The organizers could have made things seamless by providing access to all the angles, but these things are part and parcel of the sport. However, fans might not be ready to move on from the R3 match just yet. One fan came in support of Wozniacki, as they called Maia a cheater, “Unfortunately, she just lost to the cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater!!”

While some levied cheating allegations against the Brazilian tennis star, one fan supported the 28-year-old, as they were not aware of the incident that put the Brazilian in a negative light. “ What are the cheating allegations about with Haddad Maia? Have never heard that about her,” the fan wrote.

Meanwhile, not everyone was happy with Wozniacki’s words, as one fan wrote, “She’s not nice. The tour needs to FULL STOP the taunting.” This was not all, as some tennis fans highlighted Wozniacki’s record since she came back into the circuit. The Dane has yet to make it to the semifinals of any major in the last 2 years. While she has been the no. 1 player in the past, her current world ranking is 71. Hence, a fan said, “She’s been so unlikeable and arrogant since her return. Since which, let’s be honest, she’s been mediocre at best.”

Wozniacki’s act on the court did not surprise some tennis fans, as they clubbed her with other tennis players who, according to them, displayed unorderly conduct in the past. One netizen said, “No surprises: as with the various Collins, Ostapenko, Putintseva. It’s not the first time that this girl has assumed impolite attitudes or made impolite statements.”

However, the controversy is in the past now, as Maia has moved on to the quarterfinals against Muchova. She will be looking to block out the outside noise. But some tennis fans feel that Muchova might put a stop to Beatriz Haddad Maia’s dream run at the US Open. “Something tells me Haddad Maia is not getting past Muchova,” a fan wrote.
