The tennis world is no stranger to drama, but this latest phase has left fans reeling. With the dust still not settled on Jannik Sinner’s doping saga, another storm has hit—and this time, it involves none other than Polish superstar Iga Swiatek. The Pole, celebrated for her dominance on the court, now finds herself at the center of a doping controversy that has sent shockwaves through the community. As fans grapple with disbelief, new and intricate details about her case are beginning to surface, leading to further curiosity.
The Polish tennis sensation accepted a one-month ban as confirmed by a statement shared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on Thursday, November 28th. It was found that Swiatek tested positive for low levels of Trimetazidine also known as TMZ, in an out-of-competition sample in August 2024 ahead of the Cincinnati Masters. However, the Pole explained to the investigative agency contamination was caused unintentionally by the contamination of one of her medications, melatonin. This explanation was accepted by the ITIA which let her go with a fine of the amount she bagged at the Cincinnati Masters, the first tournament she played after the results. And now, more detailed reports have come to light.
According to the Polish publication Sport.pl, Swiatek was gearing up to play at the Asian swing as well, even though she faced a defeat at the US Open quarterfinals. However, on September 12, she received an email that confirmed her positive doping results, per the report. Soon, on September 22nd, a ban was imposed on her and hence, despite booking tickets for Beijing and later Wuhan, she could not participate in the tournaments since she did not receive a go-ahead from the investigative agency. It was only on October 5 that she received the information that she was free to participate again but it was too late to confirm her presence with the organizers of the Wuhan Open. However, this was not the only challenge she faced.

While Swiatek was allowed to play, she was subjected to detailed questioning at the Billie Jean King Cup, which lasted for around three hours, the report claimed. Both Swiatek and her team cooperated in the process and did everything to defend themselves. It was also highlighted that Swiatek in fact traveled to France for anti-doping tests on hair, since, traces of doping remain the longest in the hair of an individual. While the initial email already highlighted that only a small concentration of the substance – 0.05 ng/ml – was found in her body, Swiatek did not want to leave any room for doubts. And hence, she decided to take a test in France.
Ultimately, on November 28th, the Pole was free from all the charges with just eight days remaining in her suspension period. However, that would make no impact on the player since there are no further tournaments anytime soon. Swiatek, meanwhile, cannot be happier.

Taking to her social media soon after the statement by the ITIA was released, Swiatek shared that it was the “worst experience” of her life, dealing with such a case. However, she expressed relief over being cleared in the case. “In the last two and a half months, I was subject to strict ITIA proceedings, which confirmed my innocence,” she shared. However, many in the tennis community cannot just digest the news of another doping case involving a high-profile player and questions are being raised against Swiatek.
Former tennis player lashes out at Iga Swiatek’s doping controversy
Iga Swiatek boasted a clean record until the latest doping controversy came to light. However, the 5-time Grand Slam winner was not exempted from criticism as many in the tennis community questioned the entire ruling and the process revolving around the same. Leading the fray is none other than British doubles player Tara Moore.

Taking to her X, Moore expressed her surprise over the judgment and wrote, “I took 19 months off as I had to make a ‘change to my team’ too guys. Let’s not forget, mine was also contaminated, and 2 other people also tested positive yet ITIA are appealing my case. Why is no one seriously looking into the corruption of the organisations that govern us?” For the unversed, Moore faced a 19-month provisional suspension after testing positive for anabolic steroids boldenone and nandrolone in May 2022. Ultimately it was found that the substance in her body was due to contaminated meat, and hence the delay in her case was questioned yet again when Swiatek’s latest saga came to light.
Similar dissatisfaction came to light from Denis Shapovalov as well who wrote, “1 month ban eh” over the latest judgment. For now, it would be interesting to see how the latest controversy continues to evolve. Will Iga Swiatek face more backlashes? Well, that remains to be seen.
