Aryna Sabalenka has done it yet again! Defeating America’s Jessica Pegula by 7-5, 7-5 in the US Open finals, Sabalenka grabbed her second Grand Slam title of the 2024 season. With this emphatic triumph, she is just the second woman in the last 27 years to achieve the feat, joining Angelique Kerber, who won them both in 2016. However, despite running the show in NY, tennis legend, Chris Evert has yet again become thick of all actions because of her commentary and guess what? Chris Fowler has joined her too this time!
This was Aryna Sabalenka’s third Grand Slam triumph in her career. In this season, she has a record of 18 wins and 1 loss at the major events. Blood, sweat & tears. What a dominating run it has been from the 26-year-old Belarusian! Last year she was defeated by Coco Gauff in the same stage at this iconic venue and after finally sealing the deal this year, Sabalenka said, “I’m speechless right now. It’s always been a dream of mine and finally, I got this beautiful trophy. If you’re really working hard sacrificing everything for your dream, you’re going to get it one day.”

Jessica Pegula, on the other hand, gave a tough fight and there has been plenty to cheer for her too from this campaign. However, her disappointment was clearly revealed through her speeches when she said, “I wish she would have at least let me get one set. We had a tough match in Cincinnati a few weeks ago and she’s one of the best in the world.”
Although Pegula played well in this match, fans feel these two commentators weren’t “neutral” in the match. Per what fans saw on ESPN’s Sabalenka-Pegula coverage, they accused Evert and Fowler of favoring the American tennis star!
Chris Evert and Chris Fowler’s commentary fails to impress the fans
Previously we have seen Chris Evert and John McEnroe coming under fire for their commentary at the US Open. Fans accused them of having a “lack of knowledge about tennis outside of slams.” Some of them even wrote that ESPN has way better commentators on the bench who can really add some value during their commentaries. Clearly, they weren’t too happy with these two commentators and, now renowned American broadcaster, Chris Fowler joins the list! One of the fans urged, “Somebody please retire Chris Fowler and Chris Evert. Enough. So biased for any American and making inane comments without any insight.”

The other one called it embarrassing. The fan wrote, “@jon_wertheim @awfulannouncing Chris Evert cheering on pegula while broadcasting. Unprofessional. Embarrassing.” Previously, she was accused of being “biased” toward Coco Gauff. At that time, she was heard saying Iga Swiatek’s chances of winning the 2024 US Open had increased significantly with aaGauff’s exit. Fans didn’t take this lightly because of Swiatek’s dominance this season and also over Gauff in their H2H.

Even during Gauff’s match against Elina Svitolina in the R3 of the 2024 US Open, fans accused the same. Now seeing her repeating a similar biased commentary during Aryna Sabalenka’s match against another American tennis star made the fans say, “I am so sick of the commentators pulling for one player over another. Especially Chris Evert. They should be neutral in their commentary,” said the other one.
After losing the hard-fought match against Sabalenka, Pegula was heard saying, “She’s super powerful and isn’t going to give you anything. She can take the racquet out of your hand.” She tried her best to make the American tennis fans happy, but couldn’t hold on to her temperament in the end. However, Fowler’s alleged remark on Pegula has now caused a bit of controversy. A few of them questioned, “Did Chris Fowler really call @JPegula ’s work ethic “blue collar”? Wtf. Do better, @espn @usopen.”
According to Forbes, Jessica Pegula’s father, Terry Pegula is the 378th richest person in the world. His net worth is estimated to be around $7.7 billion. Despite her success on the courts, time and again her failures have drawn a few unnecessary remarks about being the “world’s richest tennis player.” A fan wrote, “I just threw up in my mouth. Chris Fowler describes Pegula’s game as ‘blue collar’. Chris Everett says ‘She learned it from her family.’ The billionaires. Her game is good. Great even. But seriously.”

How does Jessica Pegula feel when her rich background overshadows her on-court prowess? Well, once during an interview she said, “Yeah, I mean, people say that. I personally don’t have that money. It’s probably my dad or my parents. I don’t know why that kind of stuck. I mean, I understand, though. My family obviously is pretty well-known back in America.” Clearly, she isn’t too pleased with those remarks.
After hearing the commentary in the final of the 2024 US Open, some of them wrote, “Nah, my bad, it was Chris Fowler apparently! My brain clocked out after hearing that sh-t,” said the other one. Share your thoughts on the controversies surrounding the commentaries at the 2024 US Open.
