However, in a display of her maturity and character, the Japanese returned to the court and addressed the press. She revealed how the ever-growing expectations added external mental pressure that eventually affected her performance. Notably, Naomi wasn’t the only one to make headlines; American gymnast Simone Biles withdrew from the finals of her event, citing mental health issues.

Shocked, many spoke against the two athletes, while a few others came to their support.

“This is a very profound moment” – Chris Evert

Among the many who came to the athletes’ aid, one was former World No. 1, Chris Evert. The American took to her Twitter to congratulate the two women and was all praise for their bold words.

She wrote,Bravo Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles. You are showing such courage in speaking out for ALL young athletes who experience nerves, stress, expectations and pressure. This is a very profound moment in sports. Thank you.”

Retired Australian tennis player, Rennae Stubbs OLY, also had a few strong words in favor of the two young guns. Currently a coach and commentator, the six-time Grand Slam champion had advice for all those who criticized the players.

She said, I woke up to the news of Simone & after the loss of Naomi & the expectations put on both of them in Tokyo, it made me sad. If u have a critical opinion, do yourself a favor, watch #weightofgold – cause if u criticize athletes, DONT! You’ll never understand! NEVER!!”

Not just tennis peers, but various entities from the sporting world spoke in support of the two athletes. NBA’s first Asian-American champion, Jeremy Lin, was one of the many who came to their aid.

Taking to his Twitter, he said, “Propsss to Naomi and Simone for reminding us the importance of taking care of ourselves!! Grateful we get to watch how they’re gonna keep changing the game for future generations in AND outside their sports.”

Former tennis player Mardy Fish also lashed out to critics who suggested that Simone Biles should not be allowed to don the American colors at the Olympics ever again.

He said, “This is why people don’t take their mental health seriously. Do you honestly think she would just pull out of something she trained her whole life for because she lost? I wouldn’t expect you to understand an athlete’s perspective but this ain’t it.”
