It’s so true that looking after our minds and bodies is right up there with any big career goal or responsibility. And when you think about tennis, the sheer physical and mental toughness players need is incredible. Someone who really gets this is American tennis star Taylor Townsend. On the physical side, just a few weeks back, Taylor shared a pretty alarming update about dealing with Atlanta’s intense spring pollen. She even posted a video on her Instagram saying she felt like Atlanta was “trying to F—— kill” her with the crazy pollen levels. Now, just hours ago, Taylor shared another concerning health update, and it even prompted a heartfelt response from Coco Gauff. So, what exactly happened to Taylor?
Taylor Townsend was last seen in action in her doubles match in the SF of the Miami Open, where she and her partner, Katerina Siniakova, lost to Miyu Kato and Cristina Bucsa, 6-2, 5-7, 2-10. Since then, questions have been mounting over her unexplained withdrawals in quite a few tournaments. She finally addressed all those concerns on Thursday.
“So in Miami, I fell and ended up getting a mild concussion in my quarterfinal doubles match…This is my first time back on court in almost a month. I was just really scared. I did a lot of testing, and it came back that I did have a concussion.” Despite that, Townsend and Siniakova won their QF encounter against Storm Hunter and Caroline Dolehide, 7-5, 6-2.

Although she initially hoped to recover in time for the Madrid Open, she shared that her symptoms, including recurring headaches, have unfortunately returned, forcing her to take a step back from the sport to fully recover. However, the good thing is, “These last three or four days have been the first time I’ve had no headaches,” said Townsend.
Highlighting her hunger to succeed and her incredible professionalism, she said, “If you know me, you know I’m not the kind of person or player who’s going to show up if I’m not prepared. I really wanted to give myself the time to heal properly. I was really concerned about my head.”
Although Taylor Townsend will not be seen in action at the Italian Open, she has confirmed that she will make her return at the 2025 French Open. “I’ll be front and center at Roland Garros. So, stay tuned for my comeback.”
Seeing this post with the caption, “Working hard to come back better and stronger from this concussion. It’s something I’ve never experienced in my life, but health comes first! I love you guys, and I will see you in Paris,” Coco Gauff penned down a cheerful message saying, “sorry to hear that taylor!! missing you here in europe! get well soon ❤️.“

Taylor Townsend and Coco Gauff share a very close bond. When the 19-year-old Gauff lifted the US Open title in 2023, Townsend was among the first ones to express her love and admiration for the youngster through a social media post. She shared a series of crying emojis, expressing her emotions, saying, “I’m so proud of you!! I’m over here crying on the treatment table @cocogauff.” It’s worth noting that Townsend was then in the middle of her recovery to get better for next year’s season.
Then this year, when Townsend won the AO doubles title with Katerina Siniakova, Gauff was among the first ones to congratulate her on her biggest success. On March 14, 2025, she even took a moment to celebrate a special occasion in the life of Taylor Townsend’s son, Adyn Aubrey. Interestingly, both Gauff and Townsend have one thing in common. What is it?
Both Coco Gauff and Taylor Townsend have been very open about mental health
Mental health is just as important as physical health! Coco Gauff and Taylor Townsend know that very well. Gauff has time and again revealed how she had struggled initially to deal with the hype and mental pressure brought onto her by her rapid rise in the tennis world. There was a time when she even had to rediscover her love for the sport after becoming depressed.

In June 2024, while talking about her lowest point in her career, when it came to her mental health and her learnings from that, Gauff said, “I wish a-year-ago-me could see me now. I was really in a dark place… But I think I’ve grown a lot. I’m glad I used that moment to strive to get better. The next person of the season was the best I’ve ever had. That just shows bad moments don’t last forever.“
Just like Gauff, Townsend has been very vocal on this topic. In an interview, she highlighted the need for mental well-being and self-care by saying, “My mental health priority is self-love, really. In this downtime, I’ve really been trying to invest in myself — figuring out what that looks like and what that means.”
She further added, “I’m so busy, and there are so many distractions, so I don’t do things just for me a lot of the time. I’ve been trying to focus on self-love, even if that’s doing nothing — just being nice to myself. And when I do things, I want them to be things I actually enjoy and that bring me joy. Not just running around doing stuff because I have to, but being more intentional about it.“
