Becoming a Grand Slam champion for the first time got much sweeter for Coco Gauff, as it happened right there on her home turf. At the tender age of 19, the WTA sensation secured this season’s US Open crown in style. However, it later came as a huge surprise that her ‘mystery man’ played a subtly supportive role in her maiden major triumph in the tennis circuit.

In an effort to refocus, the American tennis prodigy turned to her “boyfriend” the night before her first Grand Slam title match. Reminiscing about the same, the 19-year-old recently narrated how her 1 AM phone call with her boyfriend helped her to cope with her US Open butterflies.

After ending the half-a-decade-long American Grand Slam drought, the new world No. 3 dropped a boyfriend bombshell in her post-match press conference. During the honest confession, Gauff disclosed that she had been talking to her “boyfriend” until one in the morning, on the eve of the US Open final.

While many players would have been overwhelmed, the tennis prodigy also had butterflies, but she was on the phone with her mystery man. Considering the same, Gauff was questioned about what they were discussing during their 1 a.m. call. In an interview with TODAY, the American said, “He asked if I wanted to talk about it. And I was like, ‘No’. So, yeah everything except that.”

The 19-year-old admitted that, aside from the potential for Grand Slam triumph, she discussed everything with her boyfriend. The newly crowned US Open champion went on to say how she later realized at 1 a.m. that she had to go to bed in order to be productive the next day.

While reminiscing about their late-night phone calls, Gauff also revealed how talking to her boyfriend really helps her to cope with the Grand Slam championship match butterflies. She said, “And my last time I was in a Grand Slam final I couldn’t sleep the whole night but since talking to him help me go to sleep”
