In sports, there are times when something extraordinary happens that people will always remember. This summer, Maria Sharapova gave us a glimpse of one of those moments. She shared a picture that transported us to a special night when she met two incredible women: tennis icon Billie Jean King and Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

Maria Sharapova’s support for the two women came right after she had acknowledged Billie Jean King on the 50th anniversary of the legendary “Battle of the Sexes” match between Billie Jean King and then-tennis great Bobby Riggs.

5oth anniversary of the “Battle of the Sexes”

Fifty years ago, a remarkable event took place that went beyond sports: it was called “The Battle of the Sexes.” In this famous match on September 20, 1973, at the Houston Astrodome, Billie Jean King, the top women’s tennis player, faced Bobby Riggs, an older former men’s champion. King, at 29, was at the peak of her career, while Riggs, aged 55, represented old-fashioned ideas about men being better than women.

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, King defeated Riggs in three straight sets, with a score of 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. The New York Times described the atmosphere as “more suited for a circus than a sports event,” with over 30,000 spectators filling the stadium. Millions more watched the event on national television, and it reached viewers in 36 other countries via satellite.
