Following the conclusion of the quarterfinal round fixtures at the Stuttgart Open, fans will now be treated to a blockbuster semifinal match between two WTA superstars. The reigning Wimbledon champion, Markéta Vondroušová, will square off against the current number 27 player, Marta Kostyuk, in the Porsche Arena.

Some of the biggest names from the women’s tour grace the indoor clay courts of this WTA 500 category tournament. As the likes of  Kostyuk and Vondroušová will be vying for a place in the championship game, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in this high-profile encounter in Stuttgart.

The Ukrainian tennis star has started the clay court season after her semifinal defeat at the Indian Wells Masters. Now entering the Stuttgart Open as an unseeded participant, Marta Kostyuk brushed aside the likes of Qinwen Zheng and Laura Siegemund in the initial round matches. In the quarterfinals, the 21-year-old player then pulled off a major upset against the reigning US Open champion and the third seed, Coco Gauff, as she won with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. During the three-set thriller, Kostyuk hit one ace and 10 double faults against the American, while she had a first-serve win percentage of 52% and a 61% on her second serves.

Markéta Vondroušová, on the other hand, is entering the Stuttgart Open as the 7th-seeded participant, and she defeated the likes of Donna Vekić and Anastasia Potapova in the initial rounds. The reigning Wimbledon champion then prevailed in a three-set quarterfinal match against the second seed, Aryna Sabalenka. Vondroušová hit five aces and four double faults against the Belarusian while winning 58% of points on her first serve and 53% on her second serve. She also won 7 out of 8 break points.

Kostyuk vs Vondroušová: Head-to-Head

The semifinal between Marta Kostyuk and Markéta Vondroušová at this season’s Stuttgart Open will also mark their second meeting on the women’s tour. In their previous encounter at the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers, Vondroušová came out on top in straight sets, and she currently has a 1-0 lead in their H2H record.

The Ukrainian player is in stellar form this season, securing two semifinals and one runner-up finish at the San Diego Open. While having a brilliant 68/33 on the clay courts, Kostyuk has defeated two top-seeded participants during her campaign in Stuttgart. If she manages to carry on this great momentum, the 21-year-old will most likely prevail in the semis against  Vondroušová, who has faced a number of initial round defeats this season.
