Hsieh Su-wei has taken the center stage after beating the US Open 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu in their 2nd-round clash. She defeated the Canadian 6-3 6-2 in a game that she controlled from the get-go.
This early upset at the hands of a relatively unknown Taiwanese player had more than one aspect of greatness to it. The win that appeared very easy on the surface has a backstory to it, which is extremely heartbreaking and concerning.

The world #71’s straight-set victory over Bianca Andreescu showed the kind of resilience she has in her game. But what is the origin, the breeding ground of that show of grit?
In a recent interview, the 35-YO player revealed, “I come from a very small place and it’s very difficult situation in Taiwan to find a practice, to have a professional tennis coach and hitting partner, fitness coach.
“Because I was in Japan for almost three years and I have a club, I have somewhere to live, my boss she helped me to go to tournament. That’s why I come back with the tour, because before I go to Japan, I stopped my tennis almost one year.”
One can only imagine how tough it would be for a professional player to force herself out of the game for an entire year.

At the Aus Open, her best results came in 2008 & ‘18 when she reached the 4th round of the tournament. This year, in the last 2 matches, she has shown impressive athleticism and great court coverage for her age. This only shows that the Taiwanese player can forge power from those days of darkness and force more upsets.
