The approach of the WTA Finals, a climactic event that crowns the women’s tennis season, is a stirring cocktail of excitement and uncertainty. Ever since its inaugural year in 1972, the WTA Finals has stood as the apex of tennis competition, where elite players contend for glory.

The WTA Finals have had a long history. They started back in 1972 as the Championship on the Virginia Slims Circuit tour and have been held in different spots all over the world. The tournament found its home last year at China’s Shenzhen Bay Sports Center. But this year, a puzzling twist adds intrigue – the host city remains unknown.

Tennis fans bombard Twitter post with mixed reactions

However, the usual anticipation for the tournament has taken on an air of suspense as the WTA faces a critical deadline – the selection of the 2023 Finals’ host city and event dates, now a mere 11 weeks away. The situation prompts reflections on past missteps, raising concerns about potential pitfalls if history repeats itself. Craig Shapiro, a well-known tennis insider, added an interesting twist with a tweet. He hinted that the 2023 WTA Finals might be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This got fans talking with mixed feelings. Some have a soft spot for the usual host, Newport, and are concerned about big changes, stating, “Oh no I love Newport! Not gonna say what I think about the WTA finals bc it’ll be insulting.”

Others worry about Saudi Arabia getting more involved in sports like golf and soccer, stating, “Saudis sticking their big bucks in golf & soccer as well. Going to be the undoing of these sports.”

Safety of players, the sport’s integrity, and even geopolitical factors demand careful consideration. One fan’s musings highlight a poignant question, “I am genuinely curious what the WTA would do if someone like, say, Kasatkina qualified for the tour finals. Could they genuinely guarantee her safety?”

Another fan pointed out a potential similarity, “It’s been held in Doha, Qatar before. Saudi Arabia isn’t that dissimilar”

There’s also a critical view. A user said, “WTA was not rushing to announce the location of the finals because why would they? They quit any ambitions of getting revenue from tickets and making their product attractive to fans. They are taking life support money from Saudis while they are killing the patient”

The delicate balance of the situation is further underscored by another comment: “Crazy how the WTA has already begun the PR process by saying, ‘but equal prize money!’. BJK quotes about it were horrifying.”

Injecting a bit of humor, another fan imagined the audience: “WTA Finals really about to get two people in the stands if this is true.”

Among all these different opinions, Ons Jabeur, the pioneering player from Tunisia, also shared her thoughts. She was part of the WTA Finals last year, and she talked about feeling frustrated because they hadn’t yet informed where the event would be held. She said, “It’s frustrating. I don’t know what’s happening & why we don’t know yet.”
