The heartache in LA County is palpable. Firestorms have left a trail of devastation, claiming at least 11 lives and leaving communities in despair. Amid this unprecedented tragedy, support and solidarity are streaming in from all corners, including the tennis world. Coco Gauff, known for her grace both on and off the court, has joined the outpouring of grief with an emotional message that struck a chord with fans. Demonstrating her characteristic compassion, the young star didn’t just offer words but also pledged meaningful support for the victims in these trying times.

Firefighters have been battling almost five uncontrollable blazes with devastation being the only sight across the county. More than 10,000 structures have already been razed by the fires, and around 153,000 people are under evacuation as of Friday. Another 166,000 residents are under evacuation warning, which means they may need to leave their homes soon. Insured losses are expected to be over $8 billion due to the high prices of the properties damaged or destroyed. In such trying times, Gauff has now come forward to share an emotional message for the victims.

In a video shared by Tennis Channel on X, the 20-year-old can be seen making a heartfelt statement for the victims. “First I would like to just send my thoughts and prayers to all those affected by this fire and send my biggest thank you to the firefighters and first responders who are out there and fighting these fires. Especially the incarcerated firefighters who aren’t getting paid as much.” For the unversed, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation runs 35 conservation camps in which incarcerated people who volunteer to join the program learn how to respond to a variety of disasters and can be deployed to respond if needed. As of now, 783 of these camp fighters are also battling the fire on the ground, per Forbes.

Besides Coco Gauff, Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian steps up to help victims

The widespread fire in Los Angeles is anticipated to cause more devastation with the death tolls likely to go further up. County Sheriff Robert Luna has already highlighted, “We do, unfortunately, anticipate that deaths will go up because of the destruction that we’re seeing. We’re not able to get in there in a manner — because it’s still not safe — to really do a thorough search.” And as the tennis world steps ahead, their family members are also extending support – with Alexis Ohanian being one of the prime examples.

Taking to X, Serena Williams‘ husband asked his followers to help with the contact information of a reliable and efficient organization so that he could send support and relief to the victims. “Devastating. Who are the best orgs with the least overhead aka most efficiency we should be donating to help?” he wrote. He further shared the works of an organization named Direct Relief, highlighting that it is working on the ground to distribute N95 respirators to the victims and hygiene kits to the evacuation centers.
