However, in addition to her spectacular performances, the Latvian tennis star also made headlines due to a controversial incident that took place during her campaign. Her stunning victory against the American Bernarda Pera was marred by a disruptive and drunk fan, who later had to face the wrath of the 26-year-old player.

Now, after her unsavory on-court exchange in New York, the former world No. 5 has once again come forward to issue some blunt remarks toward the annoying spectator. Let’s dive into the story.

In a three-set thriller, it was Ostapenko who prevailed in the third-round matchup against Bernarda Pera 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. However, in the third set when the Latvian was leading 4-1, a spectator constantly tried to distract her by shouting like “crazy,” particularly during her serves. But then came a point when Ostapenko finally decided to deal with the disruptive fan in a cheeky manner.

After clinching a great point against her American opponent, the former world No. 5 snarkily waved goodbye to a spectator who got so furious that he eventually left the stadium. Later, in her post-match conference, Ostapenko was asked to comment on the contentious episode in New York.

“But, yeah, this fan, I was leading 4-1 in the third set, and then suddenly I served a serve and he started to shout like crazy. Yeah, not like one or two words, I think two sentences in a row.”

In her blunt response, the former French Open champion further revealed how even the umpire tried to stop the fan after his lengthy rant. Now, after her controversial third-round match, a big challenge awaits her in the round of 16.

Unsurprisingly, her Pole opponent has been on a roll as she has clinched consecutive straight-set wins during her remarkable campaign at the US Open. Players of high caliber like Kaja Juvan (6-0, 6-1), Daria Saville (6-3,6-4), Rebecca Peterson(6-0, 6-1) all have tasted thumping straight-set defeats at the hands of the 4 singles Grand Slam champion.
