Sofia Kenin’s 2021 season has been a rather disappointing one. So far, she has registered an 11-10 win-loss record on the WTA Tour in 2021. Notably, the American youngster is yet to play a singles match, since her Wimbledon Championships second-round exit. Now, falling victim to yet another setback, she announced her withdrawal from the upcoming WTA 1000 Indian Wells tournament.

Falling to find any consistency throughout the tour, Kenin dropped from a career-high World No. 4 to World No. 8 in WTA Rankings. With rising competition from active players on the Tour, she might fall out of the Top 10 soon.

Notably, the BNP Paribas Open announced Kenin’s withdrawal news on their official Twitter page. The announcement read, “Sofia Kenin has withdrawn from #BNPPO21. Hope to see you back next March.”

Simply unfortunate

Before Sofia Kenin, Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka also announced her withdrawal from Indian Wells. Currently, she is on an indefinite break from tennis, following her US Open loss.

As for Kenin, she would hope to recover soon and hit the training courts again. However, the main reason for her withdrawal is still unknown. This brought up some interesting fan reactions on the news, though.

Notably, one fan wrote, “At this point, there is something really wrong. Some really really wrong with her. She announced covid August 26, this is September 28, we don’t know her status, she kept on withdrawing from tournament and no one is even checking up on her.”

Besides, tennis reporter Jose Morgado claimed, “End of a nightmare season for her.” Meanwhile, another fan mocked her ranking status. He wrote, “And still gonna end the season top 10… legend behavior.”

One fan reflected on when Kenin played her best on the Tour, whereas another wondered, “when will this girl ever come back.”

Apart from Abu Dhabi and Yarra Valley Classic, Kenin did not reach the quarterfinals in any tournament. It clearly explains her inconsistency throughout the season.
