Sofia Kenin makes her mother nervous every time she plays. Four years back, this WTA star bagged her one and only Grand Slam in Melbourne. Despite hugging her father in happiness, Kenin’s mother was absent from the Rod Laver Arena. Years after the win, Kenin delves deeper into why her mother “still won’t watch” her game despite knowing the result.

Kenin revealed why her mother, Svetlana Kenin, chooses not to watch her clashes, including the title run at the Australian Open 2020 finals. Kenin defeated the two-time slam champion Garbine Muguruza 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. “My mum cannot watch me, Even if she knows the results that I won, she still won’t watch. I can see she’s still nervous. She doesn’t like watching. It’s fine,” Kenin said. Speaking about how “very superstitious” her mother is, Kenin discloses that her mother feels “really stressed at home” during her important matches despite not watching any of them.

This American WTA star further recalled how she told her mother that she wouldn’t be able to talk to her for hours, but she was happy knowing that her mother was aware of her victory. She also spoke about asking for a special gift from her mother after her victory. “I’m coming home, you can give me the biggest hug of your life,” Kenin told her mother.

Her mother was a hospital nurse in the Soviet Union before they moved to the United States. Kenin’s mother has been her daughter’s ardent supporter, as her social media platform is flooded with her trophies and childhood pictures. Svetlana is too nervous to watch her daughter’s matches. Therefore, she called her after her Australian Open victory to tell her she could relax. “I called her right after the match just to tell her that everything’s fine, I won, she can just relax now.”

After winning the Grand Slam in Melbourne, Kenin said, “I’m on cloud nine right now, I just can’t believe this.”  The moment was an emotional one for the WTA star as she broke down in tears after the result and rushed to hug her father, who was her early coach. She remembered getting antsy in the third set as she came close to winning, and had to calm her nerves.

“I would like to thank the crowd, These past two weeks have been the best two weeks of my life. I love you guys from the bottom of my heart,” Kenin said with intense gratitude for her supporters at the Rod Laver Arena. In fact, carrying her trophy, Kenin revealed that her match was “such a battle and it was very physical.”
