Stephens signed up for three tournaments in a bid to prepare herself for the US Open. However, the 29-year-old has failed to impress in all three of them. Starting with the Citi Open, the American lost her opening round match to Ajla Tomljanovic. Later, she featured in the Canadian Open, where she made a winning start to her campaign but was outclassed by Maria Sakkari in the second round.
The American next featured in the Cincinnati Masters, the last tournament ahead of the US Open. The 29-year-old had a near-perfect win against Alize Cornet in the tournament opener. However, in the second round, she lost to world number one Iga Swiatek.
