After a bittersweet Australian Open, Simona Halep didn’t have a great next couple of tournaments. Recently, the Romanian lost to Caroline Garcia in the first round at the Qatar Open. After a disappointing few weeks, Simona headed back to her home to analyze what went wrong.
One of the glaring reasons was, she doesn’t have a coach at the moment. Last year, she and her long-time coach, Darren Cahill, parted ways. After that, Simona had two coaches (Daniel Dobre and Adrian Marcu) with her at the Australian Open. After losing in the fourth round, she let them go as well. In a recent interview, Halep talked about needing a coach immediately.

A few weeks back, Simona Halep didn’t think she would need a coach, as she learned a lot from her previous coaches, particularly Darren Cahill. She wanted to use that experience to win matches on the tour. Now, she doesn’t feel the same way anymore.
“At the moment I don’t have any plans and I haven’t thought about it, but there will definitely be a coach in my team, because at this level it is difficult without a coach, alone,” Simona said (Google Translate).
When asked about the possibility of getting back with Darren, Simona said, “Can this coach be Darren Cahill? Darren has a player now and there is no such thing.”
Notably, Darren Cahill was the coach for Amanda Anisimova during the Australian Open.
What’s the future hold for Halep?
2-time Grand Slam winner, Simona Halep had a decent run at the Australian Open. She was the favorite to win her semi-final match against Jelena Ostapenko at Dubai Open. Unfortunately, she suffered an embarrassing defeat against Ostapenko. Halep’s confidence probably took a hit after that match as she lost in the first round at the Qatar Open.

It’s pretty certain that Simona needs a coach by her side, as she feels she can’t do it all by herself. Some of the upcoming tournaments are the Indian Wells, Rome, the French Open, and others. If Halep wants to perform well in those tournaments, she better find a coach fast. It will be interesting to see whether it will be Darren Cahill again or someone else.
