The new WTA rankings are out and one can see some quite remarkable changes in the list of the top 20 players ahead of the upcoming hard-court season. The biggest change is that of two-time Grand Slam champion, Simona Halep, who, after, missing tennis for about three months, is no longer on the list of the top 10 players.

Halep was the World No.3 player when she decided to withdraw from the French Open 2021. She didn’t compete at the Wimbledon Championships 2021 either, and as a result, failed to defend her title. The Romanian player pulled out of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 as well, stating that she was not fully fit.

This three-month-long break from the sport is the reason that Halep is no longer a part of the top 10 WTA players. Intriguingly, it is the first time since January 27, 2014, that the Romanian player has fallen out of the top-10 list of WTA players. She is currently World No.13 in the WTA rankings with 3,925 points.

Interestingly, she has just 4% points to defend in the remaining of the 2021 tennis season. Therefore, she can easily finish much higher in the WTA rankings by the end of the year if she continues to play well. Will she be able to succeed at the US Open 2021?
