Aryna Sabalenka is going through all sorts of emotions right now. While winning a Grand Slam trophy would be a joyous moment for anyone, Sabalenka has had mixed emotions. She is far away from her family, who haven’t traveled with her to Australia. As a result, the 25-year-old has missed them a lot over the past few weeks as she was grinding it out on the court. Further, she made a bizarre confession about her mother following her victory at the Australian Open.

While Sabalenka’s father passed away shockingly in 2019, her mother has been a pillar of support for her. Staying away from home hasn’t been easy for her while traveling around the world for the tournaments. Here’s what she said about her mother.

In what was a one-sided final, Sabalenka got the better of Qinwen Zheng in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. After her victory, she proceeded to the post-match press conference. During the interview, she was asked if she had a chance to speak to her family and whether she missed them.

Replying to this question, Sabalenka said, “Yes, I really miss them a lot. Of course we are in touch, on the phone, but the phone is different than in real life. Yeah, of course I spoke to my mom and there is already fight where the trophy is going. She’s really p****d right now, by the way (smiling). But yeah, I felt so far from them.”

Further, she went on to add, “I really miss them so much. I’m actually never really speak about them on the winning speeches or — doesn’t matter — on the speeches. But I just wanted to make sure that they know how much they mean to me and that they are my biggest motivation and I’m doing everything for them.”

Sabalenka had a tough past

Earlier this year, Sabalenka appeared in the second season of Netflix’s tennis docuseries, Break Point. In that series, she opened up about her father’s untimely demise and how it affected her. Further, she even detailed why she wouldn’t talk to her mother about him.

She said, “First time after I lost my dad, I couldn’t talk to mom about him. Because every time we spoke, she would cry. But when I told her I want to win a slam for him, for his memory. I wanted to put our family name in the history, you know she said, ‘What are you talking about? He was proud of you after each match you win every match for him method and titles wasn’t the big deal for him.'”
