Players often decide to call time on their tennis career when their level drops down or they lack the desire. Sometimes it’s a mixture of both, sometimes it is also down to unforeseen circumstances like long-term injuries. But the desire to participate can keep you going even in your forties. Venus Williams is a living example of how much of an impact that desire can have on an individual.

The seven-time major champion recently turned 43 and also registered her first top-50 win since 2019. Her ability to play long three-setters and stay composed under pressure is praiseworthy. Recently, Tennis Channel was admiring the former world number 1 for her dedication towards the sport as ‘Queen Vee’ is set to feature in the main draw of Wimbledon next week.

Tennis Channel’s recent Instagram story included a snippet from its podcast. The hosts were hailing Venus Williams for her desire to keep going, even at this age. One of the speakers said, “The idea of not having that (tennis) in your life is really pretty challenging.? She’s (Venus) adjusted very well to playing with house money, which a lot of champions have not done. She’s not embarrassed out there.

The speaker went on to speak about Venus not feeling embarrassed about her drop in level. He further added, “You know people always say ‘ I don’t want to be walking out there when I am 35 years and I can’t hit the ball the way I used to.’ No, she said, ‘Yeah I’m a player. I go out there and I play, and I can always think I can win. I got that much self-confidence, that much desire.’ And I think it’s a marvellous thing.
