Coco Gauff’s remarkable journey to the semi-finals of the US Open has not only made headlines but also drawn comparisons to fellow American tennis legend Serena Williams. In her quarterfinal post-match interview, Gauff was asked about her feelings regarding becoming the first American teenager to reach the semi-finals at the US Open since Serena accomplished the feat in 2001.

Gauff, visibly humbled and in awe of Serena’s legacy, expressed her deep admiration for the tennis icon, acknowledging Serena as the greatest player of all time. She emphasized that she is far from reaching Serena’s legendary status but feels incredibly honored to be mentioned alongside her. “Oh, it means a lot to me. I mean, being in any sentence with her is great. I mean, she’s the greatest player of all time. You know, I’m nothing close to that yet. I’m just really honored to be in the same sentence as her.” said Gauff in the post-match conference.

It should not come as a surprise to many, but Coco Gauff, like many younger players, considered Serena Williams her idol while growing up. “I never take it for granted. She’s my idol. I think if you told me when I was younger that I would be in these same stat lines as her, I would freak out. I’m still trying not to think about it a lot because I don’t want to get my head big or add pressure, but it is a cool moment to have that stat alongside her,” Gauff further continued speaking about the huge milestone that she has achieved.

Even in the past, Coco has admitted on many occasions that Serena is one of the main reasons why Coco is a player today. She has not shied away from highlighting the importance that the 23-time Grand Slam winner holds in her life.
