The sports world has seen many rivalries between siblings, some of which have been bitter and some of which have been sweet. The rivalry between Venus and Serena Williams has been one of the best on-court rivalries in the history of tennis. However, their bond off the court has been truly exemplary. They have always cherished each other’s successes and took inspiration from each other whenever needed. In a recent Q&A session, Venus talked about taking inspiration from Serena’s incredible comeback at the 2007 Australian Open.

Venus counts Serena Williams as her hero
During that Q & A session on EleVen by Venus’ official Instagram, the 7-time Grand Slam winner answered many fan questions. In one of the questions, a fan asked her, “What is the lesson you learn when you see Serena at the 2007 AO?”

In reply, Venus wrote, “She’s magestic. She’s my hero. Want to be just like her. She’s got so much courage. That’s how I got mine! Plus she unbelievable to watch. Still UNMATCHED.”

She also added a YouTube link to that final match between Serena and Maria Sharapova. In that final, the American tennis player destroyed Sharapova in straight sets to clinch her 8th Grand Slam title.
Serena’s famous 2007 Australian Open comeback
Speaking of that final match, nobody gave Serena a chance before the tournament started. Incidentally, she didn’t win a single Grand Slam tournament for two years prior to that final.
Also, due to various injuries, she went outside of the top 100 in the WTA rankings and entered the 2007 Australian Open as World no.81.
Before the start of that tournament, reporters asked her about her expectations from the Australian Open. In reply, she said, “What do I expect? I just expect to go out there and most of all have fun. Mostly the things I’m expecting to do are based on just technical things. I think if I do that well, then I’ll be fine.”
After winning her first two matches with ease, she was almost on the brink of elimination in the third round. The fifth seed, Nadia Petrova, had a 6-1, 5-3 lead and appeared to be headed to victory. However, Serena made a remarkable comeback and won the match by 1-6, 7-5,6-3 to move to the fourth round. In the quarter-final, she again faced a tough challenge in Shahar Peer. After a tough battle, the American clinched a 3-6,6-2,8-6 victory over Peer.

Then, Williams won the semi-final pretty easily to set a final clash with the top seed, Maria Sharapova. Many people were expecting a tough match, but Williams won the match in just 1 hour and three minutes; the final score was 6-1,6-2. This was her third Australian Open title. Later, she went on to 23 Grand Slam titles, just one shy of Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slam titles. Despite that, many people call her the Goat (Greatest of all time).
