2010. That’s when Shelby Rogers turned professional and made her debut that year at the US Open. But injuries and surgeries throughout the years were too debilitating. Now, it is time for her to retire. She made an emotional revelation as she prepared to face Jessica Pegula in her first round at the US Open in 2024. Her heartfelt message prompted an emotional response from her husband, John Slavik.
Sharing her retirement news with her fans on social media, Rogers expressed her deep love for tennis. She stated that she would “play this sport forever” if her body allowed it. She further wrote, “There really aren’t enough words for this moment, but I can confidently say that I have pushed my body to its limit. These last couple of years fighting with injuries and surgeries have been challenging. Now my body is telling me it’s time.”
Responding to that, Rogers’ husband also dropped an emotional message, as he wrote, “Here we go. So proud of you. Blessed to be a small part of your journey.” Shelby Rogers met her husband, John Slavik, in 2021 and the couple got married in December 2023.

Fans are sad to see the tennis players exit this soon. Regardless, Rogers wishes to motivate the upcoming generation of tennis players. “My heart will always love this sport, and I hope I can pass along some inspiration to the next generation of players to dream big and keep growing the beautiful game of tennis, I am very much looking forward to this next chapter of my life… but I can’t wait to see y’all in NY for one more US Open!” Rogers further added while announcing her retirement.

Shelby Rogers’ hilarious struggle post-marriage
Rogers ended her nearly 11-month winless streak earlier this year when she overcame Czech star Linda Fruhvirtova in the Miami Open. Following that, she highlighted how she is still getting used to married life, even though she has been married to Slavik for months now.
“It’s so crazy to say that. Oh my Gosh. I am still struggling to call him my husband. It’s like I gotta get used to that. But it is so fun,” the 31-year-old said during her post-match interview at the Miami Open. However, following her funny remark, she smiled and highlighted the positives of married life as well: “Married life is awesome,” she concluded.

Her husband had proposed to her at her hometown tournament in Charleston in December 2023. And he has been a part of her tennis and he has been a part of her tennis career too. He even cheered for Rogers during her victory at the Miami Open. However, their story started in 2020, after they were set up on a blind date by their friends. They had gone on a double date with their friends to Mizner Park in Boca Raton, Florida.
Well, things got serious. They got engaged and married, and now John Slavik is helping his wife walk through one of the most difficult parts of her life: Retirement.
