The 19-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia, Coco Gauff made headlines in New York as the youngest American teenager to secure the US Open crown since Serena Williams in 1999. With an incredible exhibition of her determination, grit, and prowess on her home soil, the WTA sensation clinched the hard court major title in style.
In the process of marking her first Grand Slam triumph, the tennis prodigy had to contend and overcome some of the best players including Aryna Sabalenka and Karolína Muchová. However, despite her remarkable victories, the former Australian doubles specialist recently claimed that Gauff ‘problem-solved’ her way out of the draw in her home tournament.

On the latest episode of the AO podcast show this season, Todd Woodbridge made a bold statement about how Gauff was not at her optimum levels during her triumphant campaign. While evaluating her US Open run, the Australian tennis veteran further claimed that the tennis prodigy “problem-solved” the best of her opponents.
He said, “I don’t think she played her very best tennis to win in New York. I think she problem-solved the best of anybody in the draw. Even from the opening round when she lost the first set. She looked nervous, uptight, but she didn’t let that ruin the tournament and she just kept getting a little better and a little better.”
Prior to her comeback in the US Open title match, Gauff was one set down against the second-seed Belarusian opponent. Considering the same, Woodbridge added, “And the same thing happened in the final as well.”

Woodbridge also hailed Gauff’s prowess despite his bold assertions
During the initial phase of this season, the 19-year-old added the renowned coach, Brad Gilbert to her team, and since then she has raised her levels on the court. In particular, during the American hardcourt swing season, she has now won three WTA titles while displaying her exceptional on-court skills. And it is her forehand technique that has recently piqued the interest of the Australian tennis veteran.
He said, “I think that the change of coaching there was a definite look at the forehand where they had been trying to tweak the technique and that’s going to be continuous that I think that we will get much, much stronger.”
