Recently in an interview, Chris Evert remembered her younger sister, Jeanne Evert. Both sisters were raised as tennis players by their father. In 2020, the 18-time Grand Slam champion’s younger sister passed away from complications related to ovarian cancer. However, Chris’ strong outer shell broke when she opened up about her sister’s death in an interview. Did she wish that she could have said to her more? Evert credits her sister for saving her life. As it was due to her sister, her diagnosis came in time and she could go for treatment before the ‘ugly’ and ‘insidious’ disease got to her.

When Chris Evert got emotional while reminiscing about her sister’s sickness

Losing a sibling is hard, but seeing them suffer and then losing them to the disease is an unexplainable grief. More so, when you reminisce about your past days and miss them. Hence, the 18-time Grand Slam champion shed tears while remembering her sister’s struggle.

During an interview with PBS NewsHour, the host asked Evert whether she expressed about her feelings to her sister during her last phase of life. The former World No.1 grieved and said, “No, I don’t think you ever feel that way. She was like the wind beneath my wings, that song… And I wish I could… I could have told her more. You know sometimes, when somebody is really sick, that’s not the time to tell them…”

Moreover, when Evert was asked, one thing she would want to tell her today, the ice maiden could not stop herself from shedding tears as she emotionally replied, “…I’m sorry I’ve talked about this so much, but never cried like this… But I can’t just believe how strong she was. And that she never complained. She had ports and incisions all over her body. She was down to 80 pounds. I saw her go through this. She would either be quiet or she tried to muster up a smile.”

How Evert’s sister saved her life?

After losing her sister to the ‘silent killer’, doctors preserved the cancerous tissue to further investigate the variant. However, when it turned out to be BRCA-positive; it led the whole family to take a test for the same variant. Evert opted for a hysterectomy. And in the shocking report, Evert tested positive for the same variant. However, what surprised the doctors more was the further investigation of hysterectomy, which showed Evert positive for 2 types of cancer- Ovarian cancer and cancer in the Fallopian tubes.

Undoubtedly, her sister saved her life. After going through several chemotherapy sessions and recovering successfully, Evert is back, and has resumed her responsibilities at ESPN as a commentator.
