The year 2017 was one of the most special ones in the life of Serena Williams. She became a first-time mother then, giving birth to her daughter, Olympia. However, it came at the cost of some terrifying times as she experienced a ‘near death’ situation while giving birth to Olympia. The American legend underwent an emergency C-section after her daughter’s heart rate dropped significantly during contractions. But all’s well that ends well and she welcomed Olympia into the world on September 1, 2017. More than seven years after that, Serena Williams seems to resonate with the same values of motherhood as Selena Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey.
Serena Williams and Teefey have an interesting connection. The 23-time Grand Slam champion is an investor in Wondermind, the mental fitness ecosystem that was co-founded by Selena Gomez and her mother. During events for that startup, Williams and Teefey got together and became good friends. Eventually, they shared their motherhood tales, with Teefey also revealing the choices she made while Selena Gomez grew up.
During their talks, Gomez’s mother realized how similar their thoughts were when it came to motherhood. Explaining this, Teefey revealed, “She (Serena) made it very clear to me that she loved the dynamics between me and Selena. She really respected that we were open with everything that we’ve gone through. I think she shares the same ethos that we do, which is if you’re given a platform and you have to deal with so much negative stuff, when you’re able to give back, that makes it worth it.”
