Coco Gauff caught eyeballs when she defeated Venus Williams in the opening round of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. It was her very first entry into the main draw of the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. Subsequently, she reached the fourth round before losing against Simona Halep.

Three years on, the 18-year-old is having a memorable 2022 season. In the recently concluded French Open, the American tennis sensation reached the finals of the women’s singles and women’s doubles. After her success in the clay-court season, Gauff, who is rearing to go for the grass-court season, expressed her desire to play mixed doubles at Wimbledon.

Tennis fans’ reaction to Coco Gauff playing mixed doubles at Wimbledon

Gauff took to Twitter to look for a partner to play mixed doubles at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. She said, “Who wants to play mixed at wimby?”  

Fans had mixed reactions after hearing about Gauff’s desire to play in this event. One of the fans said, “She got far too much class.”

Another fan wasn’t happy with Gauff playing mixed doubles and said, “Us fans want you to just focus on singles.”

Some fans sent in their suggestions for Gauff’s partner for mixed doubles. One of the fans said, “@felixtennis or @cilic_marin: both excellent on grass.”

While another fan mentioned, “@JohnIsner has been, ah, playing some pretty good dubs and I cannot remember the last time he played mixed.”

In the past, the Australian tennis star, Nick Kyrgios, had expressed his desire to play doubles with Gauff. On one of the episodes of the ATP Tennis Radio Podcast, Kyrgios had said, “I have had a lot of amazing mixed doubles partners and Coco Gauff would be the one I would love to play with. I think the crowd would love that.”

“She’ll be dominating singles for a while, so she probably doesn’t want to play mixed [doubles]. But I would love to.” Thus, there is a strong possibility that Gauff might team up with Kyrgios at Wimbledon.

Gauff begins her grass-court season on a positive note

Ahead of this month’s Wimbledon Championships, the 18-year-old is participating in the Bett10 Open in Berlin. She won her opening round match against Ann Li in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (2).
