Love it or hate it, the fact is you simply can’t ignore artificial intelligence anymore. It’s safe to say that AI is here to stay. Its prominence in human affairs will only keep growing as time passes. However, it carries numerous risks as well. Alexis Ohanian, the husband of tennis icon Serena Williams, understands this reality more than most.
The tech entrepreneur and investor recently retweeted a post shared by President Biden. The post followed a White House meeting where Biden interacted with some of the most prominent names powering the AI industry. Ohanian also had some words of his own as he reflected on a 2018 incident involving Mark Zuckerberg.

President Biden chaired a meeting at the White House that involved the CEOs of companies such as Google and Microsoft. The aim of the meeting was to remind the CEOs of the importance of ensuring product safety prior to product deployment.
Following the meeting, President Biden posted a small snippet of his meeting on Twitter. He also wrote, “Artificial intelligence is one of the most powerful tools of our time, but to seize its opportunities, we must first mitigate its risks”. He added, “Today, I dropped by a meeting with AI leaders to touch on the importance of innovating responsibly and protecting people’s rights and safety.”

Retweeting President Biden’s tweet, Ohanian wrote, “It’s so important to have the technologists in the room because we can’t risk another “hey Facebook what’s your business model”-type approach in DC.” He followed up his brief writeup with the link to an article from 2018, which quite clearly reflected what Ohanian was talking about.

In 2018, Mark Zuckerberg came face to face with senators for a hearing. It was aimed at understanding Facebook’s role in making a mockery of its users’ privacy. 44 senators tore into Zuckerberg with countless questions. Unfortunately, however, many of the questions reflected the senators’ lack of understanding of the fundamentals of Facebook’s operations.
For instance, Senator Orrin Hatch asked Zuckerberg how he could sustain Facebook when it doesn’t charge its users any money for its services. In response, Zuckerberg told the Senator Hatch that Facebook runs ads. So, all in all, Ohanian does have a point, even though he himself has been blown away by generative AI tools such as ChatGPT.
