After giving some subpar performances in the year 2021, Serena Williams walked out of the circuit because of an injury sustained during the Wimbledon Championships. She made her long-awaited return to the tour only at this year’s grass-court major. However, her return wasn’t as impactful as anticipated.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion failed to secure her spot in the second round. Even though Williams walked out of the tournament empty-handed, she hasn’t lost her faith. She still believes she can compete against the current WTA stars in the upcoming hard-court season.
Serena Williams signs up for Cincinnati
Williams enrolled in the National Bank Open to kick-start her hard-court campaign. Now, she has announced her participation in the Cincinnati Open as well.
Serena Williams has now entered Cincinnati in addition to Toronto ahead of the US Open.

The former World no.1 has won two WTA 1000 titles on the hard courts of Cincinnati. She was victorious in the years 2014 and 2015 and reached the final in 2013.
Speaking of the Canadian Open, Williams will look forward to her fourth Montreal title after ending as runner-up to the Canadian tennis star, Bianca Andreescu in 2019.

The 40-year-old risked a lot to make her comeback to the tour at this year’s Wimbledon, specifically due to the lack of ranking points. Therefore, she would have fallen out of the rankings even if she had made a splendid run.
However, Williams could have achieved some unique records if she had made it past the initial rounds. The American legend was just two match wins away from listing one more Grand Slam to her list of majors where she has claimed 100 victories.
