The 2023 season was smashing for Iga Swiatek. The Polish player has achieved mind-boggling feats, which only set her up even better for the 2024 season. While she stumbled a bit near the final slam of the year, she regained her form quickly. Her wins have helped her create several records and even climb as high as Serena Williams in some aspects. 

Williams of course is widely considered to be the greatest of all time, so to even be able to match something she did in her storied career is a dream for many, including Swiatek. Except, unlike most mortals, Swiatek woke up and chose to conquer that dream.

Iga Swiatek recreates decade-old Serena Williams’ feat

The Polish superstar rocked the world when she first won the French Open in 2019. Since then, Swiatek has been consistent with her tennis, always playing with the top stars. She entered the year ranked 1 and held that rank till the US Open, where she stumbled. But it didn’t long for her to get back to form. 

Her achievements would shine even more when she would go on to win the year-end tournament of the WTA. “With 6, not only did @iga_swiatek lead the women’s tour for most titles in 2023, but she’s the first woman in a DECADE to win a WTA 250, a WTA 500, a WTA 1000, the WTA Finals *and* a Grand Slam in the same season. 👏Serena was the last woman to do it in 2013.”

Swiatek achieved many other feats this year, one of which helped her attain 77 weeks at number 1, effectively becoming the 10th player at weeks at number 1 in the history of the WTA.

While Swiatek had a shining year, she is not the only one who recreated feats of the Queen of the Court this year.

Jessica Pegula equals Serena Williams’ record

Pegula did not start the year out with great form in her singles tour. But she gained traction eventually to win the Canadian Open. She solidified her place in the WTA Finals in Cancun, where she would go on to equal the record of the 23-time grand slam champion. After she beat Aryna Sabalenka in the Finals, Pegula became the first American woman to beat players ranked 1 thrice in one year.

Previously, it was done by Williams in 2012. Additionally, her win over Maria Sakkari made her the first American WTA star to achieve six victories over players ranked in the top 10, previously done by Williams in 2013. Pegula and Swiatek gave fans a glimpse of what they are capable of, this year. Now as the two look forward to the next season, they are ready to go a step ahead.
