Alexis Ohanian, the caring husband of legendary tennis player Serena Williams, shared his sadness with all his Twitter followers. He was sad to see his website shut its door to its users. Ohanian assisted Huffman and Adam Goldstein in the 2010 launch of Hipmunk. The travel website closed its services a few years back. The Armenian-American internet entrepreneur was very close to his travel website.

Ohanian even created the mascot and the website’s design. The cofounder of Reddit shared a tweet remembering the good old days of the website.

Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian reminisces about his old website

Serena Williams’ loving husband is best known as the co-founder and former executive chairman of the social networking site Reddit. The ‘Mayor of the Internet’ had designed the mascots for all the websites he founded. These include the Initialized Capital honey badger, Hipmunk chipmunk Chip, Breadpig pig with bread wings, and Reddit alien Snoo. It has been a few years since Hipmunk, the fan-favorite travel website, shut down. Ohanian recently tweeted, “A decade ago, we launched a travel search website with a silly name “Chipmunk without the C.”

According to a statement given by SAP Concur, the travel booking website closed in 2020. Alexis Ohanian further added, “..and I had to create a mascot (chipmunk) for it — Chip might just be my favorite creation of all time.” Fans have an intense appreciation for the mascots created by Ohanian.

He also expressed his displeasure to see his mascot die out along with the website. He further tweeted, “I even had this costume made for stunts. RIP Hipmunk.” It was claimed that Adam Goldstein and Steve Huffman made an offer to buy the business back, but SAP Concur rejected the proposal. Users praised Hipmunk’s user-friendly interface and ability to sort flights based on the least painful factors.

The majority of frequent travelers, according to Ohanian, give preference to convenience over money. He and his co-founders believed that flight options should be organized based on a combination of cost, duration, and several stops.

Ohanian and his beloved business venture

Ohanian has invested in many various tech startups and firms. The husband of the 23-time Grand Slam winner has been working on his Capital Venture Firm, 776, for the past few years. It is a venture capital firm that uses software to assist startups that are revolutionizing the world. 776 had announced in February that it has closed a $500 million funding across two vehicles for its second funding round. Just a year ago, the company closed on its first $150 million fund, which was also oversubscribed. Assets worth 750 million dollars are currently being managed by it.

With over 38 businesses, totaling over $800 million in follow-on capital, are currently part of the firm’s portfolio. Ohanian notes that it’s interesting that the company rarely loads the rounds in which it takes part.
