Serena Williams’ Husband Alexis Ohanian’s $10,000,000,000 Pride Takes Severe Blow as ‘Ugly’ Talks Result in Wide-Spread Protest of Its Most-Famous Communities

Reddit finds itself in a tricky place despite being one of the top social media platforms in the world. While the platform is run by the community, one decision has caused outrage. To protest against such decisions, the entire platform is holding a blackout. Along with protesting, the users of Reddit are also tagging the co-founder, Alexis Ohanian, husband of Serena Williams, who has not said a word about the malpractice.

The American entrepreneur may want to take a measured approach to resolve this situation after having resigned from the company. Regardless, all Redditors expect him to speak out & influence some policy changes; Ohanian has not talked about the blackout or the policies set in place by his former company. 

Serena Williams’ husband absent amidst Reddit protest

The community-run platform announced the blackout due to Reddit charging developers of third-party apps for browsing it. More than 3,500 subreddits are taking part in the protest. A Subreddit on the Reddit platform is a forum. It is essentially a group of people who come together to talk about a particular subject. Instead of accounts, people rather follow Subreddits to see content for specific topics.

The most prominent Subreddits that are in the blackout are r/gaming, r/aww, r/Music, r/todayilearned, and r/pics. These have a following of more than 30 million and reside at the top. Unlike several other platforms, Reddit is heavily reliant on community moderation. Therefore, a protest with heavy numbers will have the most impact on Ohanian’s $10 billion worth of organization.

According to the BBC, one of the moderators for these subreddits explained the ugly talks & mindset behind this mass blackout against Reddit. They said, “If it was a single subreddit going private, Reddit may intervene. But if it’s half the entire website, then you feel a lot more pressured. This is a completely volunteer position, we don’t receive any financial compensation, and despite that, we do like to take it quite seriously.”

As the users comment about the blocking of the charging of third-party apps, previous Reddit officials have been silent like Ohanian. 

Ohanian’s Past Battles Concerning Reddit

Ohanian has attempted to use the platform for the betterment during the Black Lives Matter protests. He even resigned from his company and stated that the board should hire someone from the protected class in order to improve.

While he leads the field regarding this matter, he is absent when Redditors are in the midst of a battle. Even though Ohanian is absent from the current issue, some officials have spoken up about the problem. Redditors have put forth their argument, but the officials have not changed their minds about charging third-party applications.

Apollo, one of the third-party apps for browsing Reddit, has already announced that they are shutting down. Additionally, the other third-party apps, Reddit is Fun, Sync, and ReddPlanet, some of which existed before the Reddit app, have said that they will have to follow Apollo. The outcome of the blackout will come in the following days. But Ohanian’s absence on the matter of his organization is a big question mark & perhaps can be detrimental for Reddit.
