Serena Williams’ Husband Alexis Ohanian’s Long Standing Dream of ‘Paid Family Leave’ Gains Political Mileage

Alexis Ohanian has been an advocate for paid paternal leave after he realized its importance following the birth of his daughter Olympia. His efforts seem to bear fruit now. He shared a small interview clip of Texas Congressman Colin Allred on Twitter, advocating the national paid leave policy. Everyone who follows the Reddit cofounder knows about the love he and Serena Williams have for their daughter Olympia. But Ohanian is taking a step further to make sure that the same love translates to all other American children as well.

Like Ohanian, Congressman Allred also believes in the same values of having paternal care during children’s initial development. As someone raised by his single mom, Colin Allred is trying to ensure that every child gets the shade of his father’s love in the early days. As a member of the Democratic party, he wants the opposition as well to stand with him. Alexis Ohanian already has got someone to rely on to get support for his idea.

Dream of the husband of Serena Williams is turning into reality

Alexis Ohanian got inspired to struggle for paternal paid after a particular incident in his life. The near-death experience of Serena Williams when Olympia was born aroused his interest in the issue. Olympia was born in September 2017, an incident Ohanian later described as “traumatising” due to Serena Williams suffering from a pulmonary embolism. He took a sixteen-week leave from Reddit and wanted the same for other fathers and began advocating for the same.

Now his vision appears to be turning into reality. He shared a clip of Texas Congressman Colin Allred and captioned it, “Paid family leave is a vibe”. In the video, Allred talked to the hosts of the GMA3 show on ABC News. He said that “no parent should have to choose between a paycheck and being there with the family.” Further, he added that he was trying his best for every parent to enjoy the benefits of family leave with no pay cuts.

He added, “I am trying to ensure legislatively that paid family leave is available to every American.” But the idea, execution, public response, and official advocacy is still expected to be a long battle.

How and when the idea of paid leave began?

While talking to CNN, Alexis Ohanian revealed that ‘parental leave with no pay cuts’ was not his original idea. He revealed that the vice president of people and culture, Katelin Holloway, brought it up during a meeting. And Alexis Ohanian later, with a soldier’s missionary zeal, tried to make it a reality.

Being with Serena Williams and their daughter Olympia made him realize the importance of the idea. Ohanian realized why it is important for a parent to be “emotionally and physically present”. He started a campaign and soon the idea began to gain momentum.
