How often is the word “groupie” included in conversations among celebrities? Although not directly, this slang became a reason behind one of the most controversial moments in the adorable love life of the WTA legend Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian in 2022. Being a responsible husband, as usual, Alexis dealt with that with a calm approach. However, indulging in a fun podcast lately, his fresh statements not only revived the memories from 2022 but also added more to the adorable love story.
Recently, rising hip-hop artist Flau’Jae Johnson appeared in a podcast with Alexis Ohanian. The two had a fun and engaging conversation where the artist guided the Reddit co-founder through a series of engaging questions. During the podcast, Ohanian was asked to share his “Big 4 athletes of all time.”
Alongside names like professional boxer Alexis Arguello, football player Art Monk, and the late Sean Taylor, the 41-year-old didn’t forget to mention his wife, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams. “I gotta say Serena obviously. How am I gonna say? I was waiting. I mean, look, I am my wife’s biggest fan. You could even say a groupie, and I’m proud of that,” Ohanian said.

Although there was a banter between Ohanian and Flau’Jae about listing Serena after a few names, the Reddit co-founder saved his evening by clarifying that he had his wife’s name in mind and he was eventually about to come to that. Flau’Jae, who is friends with Ohanian and Williams, often shares photos of her spending time with the Williams-Ohanian family on her Instagram account. The podcast episode was a perfect example of the close bond she shares with them.
As this fun conversation came to light, the use of the word “groupie,” in particular, reminded the fans of a similar moment where Ohanian stood up for his wife. Back in 2022, the rapper Drake referred to Ohanian as a “groupie” in the song “Middle Of The Ocean” from his album Her Loss. Drake, who was rumored to be in a brief relationship with Williams, aimed at her husband, saying, “Sidebar, Serena, your husband a groupie. He claims we don’t got a problem, but, no boo, it is, like you coming for sushi. We might pop up on him at will like Suzuki.”

However, Ohanian didn’t let Drake’s words affect him negatively. He used it as armor in a response tweet, saying, “The reason I stay winning is because I’m relentless about being the absolute best at whatever I do — including being the best groupie for my wife & daughter.” But this wasn’t the only attempt of Drake against Serena.

One of the clips showed Drake in the studio working on the song “Too Good” from his 2016 album Views. In the clip, his mom, Sandi Graham, could be seen asking about the inspiration behind his songs and if the compositions had any connection to his relationships. Drake replied, “This [song] is more about me and Serena,” referring to the tennis legend, who was rumored to share a brief relationship with him back in 2015. His mom responded with a laugh, saying, “I gathered that,” making it clear that she already knew about it.
Drake’s release gives fans a unique look into his personal and professional life, apart from revealing another narrative concerning Serena Williams and her love life.
